This wine comes from own-rooted Chardonnay vines (Wente selection) planted in 1983. The 2016 Chardonnay Maresh Vineyard has a wonderful open nose of green and yellow apple and pear with acacia flowers, crushed stone and honey accents. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is youthfully coiled, opening to ripe tree fruit, lemon confit, delicate white blossoms and honey with a wicked line of acidity, finishing very long and textured. Give this some time in bottle to flesh out. 100 cases produced.

“I don’t usually use young vines,” Jim Maresh told me, “but I decided to go for it with this vineyard.” The 2016 Chardonnay Dux Vineyard has a beautiful, layered nose of clotted cream, lemon confit, acacia flowers, yellow apples, honey and toast. Medium-bodied, it’s wonderfully concentrated in the mouth with pure tree fruit flavors with toasty and floral accents. It’s framed by very juicy acidity, finishing very long and nuanced with a great bit of phenolic texture. 125 cases produced.

The 2016 Dundee Hills Chardonnay offers wonderful, fresh Bosc pear and yellow apple skin aromas with baby’s breath flowers, fresh toast, crushed rock and hay accents. Medium to full-bodied, it has a slightly creamy texture and wicked juicy acidity, with toasty flavors and earthy accents over concentrated tree fruits, finishing very long and very minerally. 100 cases produced.

Pale to medium ruby-purple, the 2016 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills has a lovely open nose of warm cinnamon stick, cranberry and baked red cherry pie with black tea leaf and potpourri spice. Light to medium-bodied, it fills the mouth with warm red fruit and layers of baking spice, earth and mineral—dried leaves, oolong tea, warm earth—with a good frame of fine-grained tannins and plenty of juicy acidity, finishing long and spicy. 550 cases produced.

This wine comes from Pinot Noir vines planted in the early 1970s. Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2016 Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard is scented of lilac, violet, pure strawberry jam, rhubarb and cranberry sauce with layers of warm earth, red and black licorice and exotic spice. Medium to full-bodied, it floods the mouth with warm red cherries, strawberry and rhubarb jam notions and wonderful accents of dried violets, earth, licorice and spice. It has very, very fine, grainy tannins and juicy mouthwatering acidity, finishing epically long with spiced warm red fruits. This just sings! 371 cases produced.

This is the first non-vineyard designate made by Jim Maresh. Pale to medium ruby in color, the 2016 Pinot Noir Old Vines has a lovely pure nose of pink peppercorn, dried black tea leaves, red and black licorice and violets with dried cranberries, red cherries and layers and layers of spice. Medium to full-bodied, it has amazing concentration of flavor in the mouth, blossoming out to pure red fruits and spicy layers, with cinnamon and autumn leaves accents, very fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity, finishing very, very long with tons of earth-laced fruit. Wow! 1,040 cases produced.
